Paper savings: Since the beginning of 2022, the team has committed to reducing paper usage. By 2023, we successfully eliminated the use of blank papers for name tags, note-taking, examination, and answer sheets. It is estimated that each participant in our corporate classes previously used at least 10 sheets of paper.

One-time Use Plastic Bottle Reduction: To further our sustainability efforts, the National Headquarters invested in a hot/cold water dispenser to encourage the use of refillable tumblers instead of disposable plastic bottles. Since mid-2022, we have required participants in our public classes to bring their own tumblers. By 2023, we completely eliminated the use of one-time use plastic bottles in all public classes.

The team is also collaborating with members skilled in electronics to explore the repair and reuse of AED trainer pads and wires, which would otherwise be discarded when malfunctioning. Recognizing the high consumption of batteries for CPR and AED classes, including those used in QCPR manikins and AED trainers, we have invested in longer-lasting batteries as part of our efforts to reduce waste.

Lifesaving Skills: Our participants saved lives for real

Social Initiatives
Starting in mid-2022, our marketing team began offering discounts for people with disabilities (OKU), students, and senior citizens to attend corporate classes. We continue to provide free CPR+AED classes to all community members, regardless of background.

At the National Headquarters, we practice a non-discriminative, flat management structure among our corporate trainers. This approach ensures that all members—from principal officers, senior trainers, tutors, advanced first aiders, and others—are treated equally and have ample opportunities to voice their concerns.
Our inclusive policy extends to various staff and trainer benefits, including:

  • Weekly badminton session
  • Breakfast before classes begin
  • Free uniform
  • Trainers Development Day held every last Sunday of the month
  • Coffee appreciation sessions
  • Annual Deepavali celebration
  • Half-yearly progress dinner
  • Annual trainers retreat

Governance
All team members have been provided with clear instructions on our anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies. In our culture of transparency, any gifts or non-cash tokens received are openly declared in our communication group. Trainers are strictly prohibited from accepting cash gifts; any cash received is donated to SJAM, with receipts issued for accountability.
Our team operates on a foundation of trust, which has resulted in zero losses of assets to date.

In a Snapshot

A Tough Beginning
The National Headquarters onboarded the former CEO of Yayasan Usman Awang to lead its commercial first aid training initiatives. Merely two days later, the Movement Control Order (MCO) was announced, bringing unforeseen challenges. This dormant period became an invaluable opportunity to reflect on the business and realign objectives.
Humble Beginnings: 4 sets of equipment with 2 trainers

The first commercial first aid training post-MCO took place in October 2021 – began with just four Laerdal QCPR manikins, four AED trainers and ten choking trainers. Demand during this period was lukewarm, prompting intensified marketing efforts. The team published a new workbook, finalized class schedules, and refined pricing and marketing strategies. A new website and Telegram channel bring fresh life and energy.

From 4 sets of equipment to 20

By the end of 2022, the team is equipped with 20 Laerdal QCPR manikins, 20 AED trainers, 20 choking trainers, 5 infant and 5 child manikins, and over 3,000 workbooks utilized during training. A dedicated team of trainers began to grow – thanks to SJAM Perak, Melaka, Wilayah Persekutuan and Selangor for collaboration.

The momentum begins

It was a challenge to gather participants for free CPR+AED classes despite the noble cause of reaching out to the community. However, perseverance paid off. From conducting just two free CPR+AED classes in 2021, the year concluded with an impressive milestone: 48 free classes, training a total of 2,752 people.

Digital Credential for corporate training

The team implemented a new system to standardize electronic certificates for commercial first aid training. These digital credentials, powered by blockchain technology, are secure, verifiable, and fraud-resistant. This innovation not only enhances credibility but also simplifies certificate management. This year, as the National HQ piloted the system, 752 digital credentials were issued.

IT and automation

Looking ahead, the team focused on reducing manual workloads by introducing a WhatsApp automation system. This system enabled class participants to receive timely notifications and reminders. Additionally, it was designed to deliver daily short messages on first aid lessons, extending community service and promoting life-saving knowledge to a wider audience.

No papers and one-time use plastics

As part of our sustainability efforts, the team worked to eliminate single-use plastic bottles and reduce paper consumption. Each corporate class participant used approximately 10 sheets of paper. This initiative resulted in an estimated savings of 13,860 sheets of paper in 2022 and 26,510 sheets in 2023. By 2023, single-use plastic bottles were completely eliminated in all public classes, saving an estimated 2,192 bottles in 2022 and 7,804 bottles in 2023. These measures reflect our commitment to promoting environmentally responsible practices in all aspects of our operations.

ESG Effort Intensified
To support well-being, the National Headquarters sponsors weekly badminton court rentals for corporate trainers, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Additionally, breakfast and meal allowances are now provided during classes, and free uniforms are offered to active trainers and facilitators. Believing in collective growth, the team organizes Trainers Development Day on the last Sunday of every month. Trainers are also encouraged to upskill through external training opportunities, and an annual Trainers Retreat is held to foster team bonding and professional development.
A year of grit and resilience

The year 2024 was a testament to grit and resilience. Social media marketing became more challenging due to restrictions on repetitive posts, prompting the team to explore alternative strategies. These included intensifying free CPR+AED classes, expanding to other social media platforms, and participating in networking events to broaden visibility. The team also faced setbacks, with some trainers and facilitators having to step back due to instructions from their superiors. Despite the reduced numbers, the focus shifted to enhancing the quality of those who remained. By providing intensified external training and credentialing opportunities, the team strengthened its core, ensuring even higher standards of expertise and delivery.

AI and automation

The team decided to discontinue the WhatsApp automation system in favor of implementing a more robust automation solution. The pilot phase of this system has recently commenced, marking a significant step forward in streamlining operations and enhancing participant engagement.
